Disney launched “Songs in Sign Language” on April 27 for National Deaf History Month, reanimating three songs to show characters performing in American Sign Language (ASL).
The project was led by Senior Animator and Director Hyrum Osmond, who said it was inspired in part by regret over not learning sign language to connect with his hard-of-hearing father.
More than 20 animators worked with Deaf West Theatre to authentically match each character’s personality and ASL details, including facial grammar; about 95% of shots were newly animated without AI.
The songs reimagined were “The Next Right Thing” (Frozen 2), “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” (Encanto), and “Beyond” (Moana 2), and viewers praised the effort for both inclusivity and creativity.
The project is currently streaming on Disney+, and both fans and collaborators hope it leads to more ASL content in the future.
