International Day of Persons with Disabilities

December 3 is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This is an important day to recognize the challenges and barriers people with disabilities face. According to the UN, people with disabilities and their households:

  • are more likely to live in poverty
  • continue to face discrimination in employment, receive lower wages, and are overrepresented in the informal sector
  • experience social protection systems that are uneven in coverage and inadequate when considering extra disability-related costs, frequently excluding persons with disabilities in the informal sector
  • have experiences within care and support systems continue to be marked by the denial of their dignity, autonomy, and agency.

If you’d like to learn more, check out the UN’s page on International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It is an important day to recognize the barriers that still exist in the disability community and ask how we can all contribute to a more inclusive society.
