Missouri lawmakers passed companion bills (House and Senate) that would give businesses 90 days to respond to ADA website lawsuits or fix their websites; the two chambers must agree on a final version before it goes to the governor.
The measure is intended to shield small businesses from a rise in website-accessibility lawsuits and to curb what supporters call frivolous suits while preserving legitimate legal action.
Business owners reported receiving little time to fix websites or were pressured to settle; more than 100 Missouri owners complained, and about 100 ADA website suits were filed in Missouri (over 2, 000 nationwide in H1 2025, a 37% increase from H1 2024).
Supporters including Rep. Mazzie Christensen, Sen. Brad Hudson, and the Missouri Chamber argue the bill balances enforcing ADA compliance with protecting businesses from abusive litigation.
Lawmakers say the bill is crafted to encourage meaningful accessibility improvements rather than settlements over minor technical issues.
