
Governor Josh Stein proclaims April 2026 as Assistive Technology Awareness Month in North Carolina.
The Proclamation defines assistive technology (low-tech items like adaptive utensils and communication boards; high-tech devices like environmental control systems and power wheelchairs). It also notes that the Assistive Technology Act reauthorization (2022) provides federal funding to states to expand availability, access, education, and financing for assistive technology.
This also highlights North Carolina’s 10-year Assistive Technology Program impact: more than 115,000 individuals served and nearly $1 million saved through device reutilization and financing; increased access expands independence and community participation for people with disabilities and older adults.
