The Department of Labor revises disability hiring rules under Section 503 rules for federal contractors, ending disability status self-identification and a 7 percent disability representation goal.
The changes take effect on Sept. 21 and align with Trump executive orders targeting what he called illegal DEI.
The DOL says the old requirements were burdensome, unlawful, and costly, while disability advocates say removing tracking tools hides inequality and weakens progress.
Other Section 503 duties still remain, including hiring qualified individuals with disabilities, providing reasonable accommodations, and avoiding discrimination.
Advocates warn the rule could reduce employment opportunities for disabled people, though they still hope employers will keep pursuing disability inclusion.
